Protecting your business from cyber-attacks: Temperature monitoring that’s independent of fridge management systems

Kelsius provides independent temperature monitoring. It does not control the operation of refrigerators or freezers.

This distinction is key following the recent reports of cyber incidents affecting refrigeration systems across Europe.

Kelsius sensors independently monitor temperatures within refrigerated environments. The Kelsius system does not control the refrigeration unit, compressor, defrost cycles or other operational functions.

This separation is important.

If a refrigeration control system experiences a fault, malfunction or cybersecurity incident that results in a temperature deviation, Kelsius provides an independent monitoring layer designed to detect that deviation and alert designated personnel.

Cybersecurity and Data Protection

Kelsius applies established cybersecurity controls across its platform, including:

  • ISO 27001 compliance through its cloud hosting partner, AWS
  • Cyber Essentials certification
  • Encryption of data at rest and in transit
  • Multi-factor authentication, roles and permissions
  • Secure software development practices including threat modelling, code reviews, vulnerability management, incident resolution management and security testing

Data Resilience and Backup

Kelsius has multiple layers of data resilience built into the monitoring system.

  • If communication between an individual sensor and the Network Controller is interrupted, monitored data is retained locally by the sensor and transmitted once communication is restored. The Network Controller also incorporates local memory, providing another layer of protection against the loss of monitoring records.
  • The Network Controller has an integral back-up battery, allowing the monitoring system to continue operating during a power interruption. The system can also alert designated personnel should the Network Controller lose communication with the Kelsius portal.
  • Once transferred to the Kelsius cloud platform, data benefits from resilient storage, backup and redundancy, including self-healing data storage and automated crash recovery across multiple data centres.

This multi-layered approach provides resilience at the sensor, Network Controller and cloud platform levels, meaning that a temporary loss of network connectivity does not automatically result in the loss of temperature records.

Kelsius monitors your refrigeration equipment, it does not control it.

The key reassurance that Kelsius provides is that it operates independently of refrigeration control systems. Should refrigeration equipment experience a fault or disruption, Kelsius provides a separate layer of monitoring designed to identify any resulting temperature deviation and alert your team, allowing you to take appropriate action quickly and protect your products.
